Simprints builds cutting edge technology for some of the poorest and most challenging environments on earth. We are working at the exciting interface of biometrics, technology  and international development: changing the status quo in the way NGOs and governments deliver vital services like vaccines, health care, finance, and emergency aid.

Working with top partners like ARM, we have designed and developed a handheld, wireless fingerprint scanner that connects with mobile phones. Our identification system is now deployed in 8 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-Asia, helping impact organisations achieve their goals. However, we have found that our scanner does not work well with children under 4 years old, and there is an increasing demand for this technology to work with a younger population and assist in global vaccination and nutrition campaigns.

We are looking for an engineering intern to join our growing tech team and help us build the first prototype for a high resolution fingerprint scanner that will work with newborns and children under 4. As this is a new project, you need to have a hacker mindset, learn quickly and have a true passion for building tech. Past experience with hardware devices is a plus.

What are your responsibilities?

  • Project: Build a fingerprint scanner using a Raspberry Pi (check this open source project here).
    • Optimise hardware design to improve resolution (e.g. camera position, focal length, illumination)
    • Improve image acquisition and processing (e.g. distortion compensation, binarization, feature extraction)

Where is this role going?

We are looking for a 3-month intern to join our team as soon as possible. This is a great opportunity for someone with the right skill set and personality to join a fast-paced, startup environment from its early days and take significant responsibility from day one.

What skills do you need?

Tech Skills:

  • Studying towards a degree in: Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Physics or any other related disciplines.
  • Programming experience in one or more of the following languages: Python, C++, C
  • Experience with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, mbed or any prototyping platforms
  • Bonus: image processing experience
  • Bonus: mechanical design using any CAD package

Human Skills:

  • Learning. You love learning new things and can pick up new tools quickly
  • Flexibility. The best tool for the job won’t always be the most familiar tool
  • Detail-oriented. You understand the importance of the small things
  • Passion. If building technology for global health sounds exciting, we want to meet you

Salary: £1300/month
