Data Scientist

Build great technology that actually matters.

Note: We are looking for 3-month interns who are interested in taking on a long-term role on our team.

Simprints builds cutting edge technology for some of the poorest and most challenging environments on earth. We are working at the exciting interface of biometrics, technology, and international development: changing the status quo in the way NGOs and governments deliver vital services like vaccines, healthcare, finance, and emergency aid. Working with top partners like Google, Unicef, and the University of Cambridge, we design and develop hardware and software that will reach over 2 million people by 2021.

We are looking for data science interns to join our growing Research Squad.  You will be leveraging data from healthcare records, large-scale research trials, and management information systems to improve the quality of life for beneficiaries around the world and enable data-driven decision making and R&D at Simprints. Our operational data derives from an Android application, backed by a back-end hosted on the Google Cloud Platform.

This work will interface with every part of Simprints. You will be part of a passionate team working together to solve some of the world's most intractable problems and committed to support your professional development, but you will need to be the team expert on handling data from day one. You will be the first data scientist in a team of 8 software engineers.

Solving real-world problems and shaping how data is used by Simprints and our partners, you will need to have a passion for real-life implications of data, commitment to collaborative problem solving, robust design, and quality product. You need to be sharp, a quick learner, and able to thrive in a startup environment. Past experience with data science and the genuine desire to develop world-class skills are essential. You will have a wide-breadth of knowledge, always looking to learn and improve.

What are your responsibilities?

  • Find information hidden in data to lead to evidence-based decisions
  • Analyse internal (e.g. longitudinal household surveys, operational data) and partner datasets (e.g. maternal health records, parasite prevalence) to show the impact Simprints has and how it can be improved
  • Develop and calculate metrics to track performance and progress of our products
  • Visually communicate information clearly to enable data-driven decision making, and to help our impact partners understand and improve their programmes
  • Use data and statistics to evaluate and help prototype cutting-edge R&D
  • Write high quality scripts that are easy to maintain

Where is this role going?

This is a great opportunity for someone with the right skill set and personality to join a fast-paced, startup environment from its early days and take significant responsibility from day one. Simprints focuses on taking complex technology and making it available to some of the most challenging environments on earth, and we are looking for passionate and talented people to help us do that.

What skills do you need?

Tech Skills:

  • BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant field;  (or anticipated graduation date in 2018.)

  • Experience cleaning, exploring, and drawing insights from data sets
  • Analytical mindset and ability to break down complex ideas into simple pieces
  • Ideally a strong statistical background, experience with Git, understanding of relational and non relational databases/data/models, and data visualisation experience
