Design Engineering Internship

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom Contract

Project location: Cambridge, UK

Duration: 12 weeks (Summer 2018) – starting dates flexible

About Simprints

Simprints builds cutting edge technology for some of the poorest and most challenging environments on earth. We developed an identification platform that allows people without any formal ID, such as birth certificate or passport, to access lifesaving services. We are working at the exciting interface of biometrics, technology and international development: changing the status quo in the way NGOs and governments deliver vital services like vaccines, health care, finance, and emergency aid.

Working with top partners like ARM, we have designed and developed a handheld, wireless fingerprint scanner that connects with mobile phones. Our identification system is now deployed in 8 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-Asia, helping impact organisations achieve their goals.

Project Description

While our fingerprint scanner is currently designed for adults, there is an increasing demand for this technology to work with a younger population and assist in global vaccination and nutrition campaigns. The usability requirements for this new segment are quite different, therefore we need to go back to the drawing board and start designing a new product. We are looking for a mechanical engineer intern to help us design the first prototype for a fingerprint scanner that will work with newborns and children under 4.

About this Internship Project

For this internship, you will gain hands-on, real-world experience by:

  • Designing a new product from the concept phase all the way to prototyping and testing
  • Brainstorming with the wider team on usability, technical viability as well as financial implications of creating a new product
  • Understanding use needs through user interviews, surveys, and conversations
  • You might even get to travel with the team to one of our field sites to test the prototypes you will build!

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

Tech Skills:

  • Studying towards a degree in: mechanical engineering, product design or general engineering (at least 2 years of study completed)
  • Strong background and interest in product design and testing
  • Experience with a 3D modelling package, ideally Autodesk Inventor or Fusion 360
  • A passion for prototyping using a mix of mechanical design and electronics using Arduino or any other platforms
  • Bonus: Experience with rapid prototyping like 3D printing

Human Skills:

  • Learning. You love learning new things and can pick up new tools quickly
  • Flexibility. The best tool for the job won’t always be the most familiar tool
  • Detail-oriented. You understand the importance of the small things
  • Passion. If building technology for global health sounds exciting, we want to meet you

Why join Simprints?

  • You’ll get exposure to designing and developing products for low-resource settings
  • Co-workers committed to delivering high quality products
  • Truly flexible working hours and time off.  More efficient late at night? Better before the sun rises? That’s fine by us. We are looking for people who get the job done, not for people who work between 9am and 5pm.
  • Fun, fast-paced Scrum culture
  • Field work around the world!
  • Quarterly ‘Lego’ days where you can work on any project you want
  • Free gym memberships and additional wellness budget!
