UX Designer

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom Full-time

UX Designer

Build great technology that improves millions of lives

Simprints builds cutting edge technology for some of the poorest and most challenging environments on earth. We are working at the exciting interface of biometrics, technology and international development: changing the status quo in the way NGOs and governments deliver vital services like vaccines, health care, finance, and emergency aid. Working with top partners like Google, Smart Design, and Unicef, we design and develop hardware and software that will reach over 2 million people by 2021.

We are looking for a UX Designer with outstanding user-experience, design-research, and design skills to take on complex tasks and transform them into intuitive, accessible and easy-to-use designs that will impact millions of people around the world. At each stage, you will anticipate what our users need, collaborate with them through co-creation and usability studies, advocate for them in discussions, and champion their ‘voice’ in key decisions to ensure our final product delivers genuine impact.

You will be utilising your full range of research, interaction design, information architecture, usability, service design and prototyping skills.  An inspiring passion for design, and genuine empathy for people paired with a deep understanding of user-centered design (UCD) and strong analytical abilities will be essential.

To succeed you need to be excited about travelling around the world, working with diverse stakeholders in challenging environments like Kenya, Nigeria, or Nepal, and championing user experience in a dynamic startup environment. There is huge opportunity to expand and grow within the organisation, for the right candidate this could mean the potential to lead all aspects of design within Simprints.

At Simprints you will be working within a cross-functional team of passionate engineers and project managers focused on different aspects of designing our products and deploying them in the field. Therefore, a deep-rooted commitment to collaborative problem solving, robust design, and quality product is critical.  You will have a wide-breadth of knowledge, always looking to learn and improve.  Whilst past experience with the requirements below is an ideal fit, we are keen to hear from you if you have the genuine desire to develop world-class skills.

What are your responsibilities?

Your responsibilities will span the whole range of UX/UI/IxD Design within Simprints and will include:

  • Coordinating and conducting research to gauge the usability of our core product and demo package, and making constructive recommendations to influence and implement change
  • Creating personas and scenarios to explore both the client journey from the first point of contact to signing the contract, and the user journey of engaging with the product out in the field
  • Designing Information Architecture (IA) for workflows and integration of our product with other apps
  • Working closely and collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders to close the feedback loop between our users and our engineers, with an appropriate focus on metrics to evaluate our experience and optimize learning
  • Creating clear infographics and visualizations to simplify and explain complex processes and concepts in an elegant and compelling way
  • Working together with the product manager and engineers to develop prototyping and product usability testing for our core product to validate concepts and hypotheses with our end users
  • Partnering with our business team to help expand our holistic approach to design, and the system and tools used to create more coherent experiences for our clients and users

What skills do you need?

You either have these skills, or you’re willing to learn them quickly:

Technical Skills:

  • Relevant degree or equivalent 3 years experience - relevant subject areas include design, computing, apps development or digital media and technology
  • Additional 3 years hands-on experience as a UX or Product Designer for mobile or physical products
  • A clear understanding of and passion for the importance of user-centered design, design anthropology, and design thinking
  • Strong creative vision, spatial skills and an instinctive sense of how to lay out data and information
  • A solid grasp of planning and conducting user research, user testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, usability and accessibility concerns
  • Fluency in UI prototyping (such as InVision or similar), and remote usability testing/viewing tools; familiarity with physical prototyping tools such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi is a plus
  • Ability to iterate designs and solutions logically, efficiently and intelligently, whilst aligning with the strategic aims of the organisation
  • Knowledge and experience in Adobe Creative Suite or other design tools
  • Strong visual design skills would be a bonus, as would past experience with mobile apps

Human Skills:

  • Intellect. You understand the importance of the small things and have a strong ability to synthesize and process key information
  • Curiosity. You have a desire to think out of the box and explore and understand how different perspectives blend together to enable an amazing user experience
  • Communication. You are able to collaborate and articulately communicate concepts, ideas and decisions effectively across many levels, and build strong interpersonal relationships with engineers, operational managers, and external stakeholders.
  • Learning. You love learning new things, are able to think on your feet, and can pick up new tools and methods quickly.
  • Grit. You have a can-do attitude and have the drive to dig deep into problems to discover pain points and features from multiple perspectives, and resilience to stay focused on a project to the end
  • Passion. If being part of team that designs and deploys technology for global health sounds exciting, we want to meet you!

  • Collaborate with a team truly committed to delivering high-quality products

  • Fun, fast-paced Scrum culture
  • Quarterly ‘Lego’ days where you can work on any project you want

  • Free healthy breakfast and snacks!
  • Coolest office in Cambridge (it’s a 14th-century castle!) with additional flexibility to work from our London office too
